Why Don’t All Spinal Decompression Offices Accept Insurance?

I have never understood this one myself. Although very few Spinal Decompression offices in Orange County accept insurance, the Irvine Spine and Rehab does.

Why Other Offices Don’t Accept Insurance for Spinal Decompression Therapy

The vast majority of us pay a bundle every month for health insurance (or are provided it by an employer in lieu of higher pay!). We all like to see those high medical insurance premiums provide a benefit to us at least some of the time.

Unfortunately, the insurance companies like to collect your premiums, but fight tooth-and-nail to keep from giving it back to their health insurance subscribers in the form of insurance benefits. Many doctors, especially Spinal Decompression Specialists, have become frustrated with fighting these insurance companies — and losing.

Who can blame them?

When an insurance company is perfectly willing to spend upwards of $100,000 for Spinal Surgery  (microdiscectomy, spinal fusion, laminectomy, laminotomy, surgical decompression, disc herniation reduction, etc.), but will consistently deny Spinal Decompression – a completely safe and highly effective treatment for disc bulges, herniated discs, disc extrusions, sciatica and more. On the surface, this can be quite frustrating, but it also does not tell the whole story.

Many Spinal Decompression doctors will try to put ALL of the blame on the insurance company, but this isn’t completely fair. Insurance Coverage is dependent upon one very important factor that is written directly into your insurance policy – medical necessity. Medical Necessity states that the doctor must prove that you require treatment of some sort and then that the treatment to be delivered will improve it. Unfortunately, many Spinal Decompression doctors have taken a “hands off” approach to delivering Spinal Decompression Therapy. Put simply, they 1) buy an expensive machine, 2) hire an untrained person, 3) provide minimal training to that person so they can be called a “tech”, and 4) have all patient care delivered by this person while the doctor has little involvement with day-to-day patient treatment. This is a great ‘business’ model, but a poor ‘treatment’ model.

Important: This ‘hands off’ approach also means that such an office cannot bill the insurance company for any treatment delivered by this unlicensed individual. The office can only bill the insurance for treatment rendered by a medical professional – a medical doctor, a chiropractor or a physical therapist, etc.

No oversight or delivery of Spinal Decompression therapy by a medical professional means that it is very difficult to provide the critical medical necessity that would allow the treatment to be covered by insurance!

Irvine Spine and Rehab Accepts Insurance for Spinal Decompression Therapy

How? you may ask.

Simple.

We don’t do what many other Spinal Decompression offices in Orange County do.

  • Every Spinal Decompression treatment is directly overseen by one of our Spinal Decompression Experts
  • We offer Orange County’s only Complete Spinal Rehabilitation Program where Spinal Decompression is only one part of our comprehensive treatment protocol
  • We have a highly trained Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation staff
  • We perform a detailed physical examination at the beginning of care, half-way through and at the completion of treatment. This is important in demonstrating medical necessity which is needed in order for any treatment to be covered by insurance.
  • We bill insurance for Spinal Decompression Therapy! Our patients get More for Less! With insurance coverage most of our patients pay 50-80% LESS while receiving MORE comprehensive care than they would at other offices.

  1. I received Decompression Therapy with great results (at another chiropractor’s office), but like you said, no insurance coverage. He told me that “highly trained staff or not, there is no legal insurance code that pays for decompression therapy.” Can you tell me what code you use so I can check it with my insurance company?

    • I’m happy that you responded well to Spinal Decompression Therapy.

Your question is a bit more complicated than will fit in this comment reply. Therefore, I did an entire post about Spinal Decompression and Insurance Coverage / Insurance Reimbursement. I believe it should answer your question. Here is the link:

This quick answer is that there is no special way to code or bill for Spinal Decompression. What makes it “covered by insurance” is combining with other therapies that compliment Spinal Decompression that ARE insurance covered. This way the total cost is defrayed by the additional services that can be reimbursed through the insurance. Also, with the proper complimentary therapies can greatly improve the speed with which you recover and improve the likelihood of success with difficult cases.

I hope this (and the detailed post) answers your question. If not please feel free to comment again.

  2. Hi, interesting read. I just found your blog and I’m already a fan. =D
